Calling it early: Picks for 2008-09 IU men’s basketball season

On the day the Tom Crean era “officially” starts (live stream here), I thought it would be fun to look at the Hoosiers schedule and made my predictions for the season. With one of the youngest teams in the nation and one of the hardest non-conference schedules it should be a roller coaster ride.

The Big Ten doesn’t seem to be as strong as the past couple of years, so I’m still optimistic that these baby Hoosiers can pull off double digit wins this season.

IU’s hiring of Fred Glass a great decision

Just when IU fans where getting comfortable with the names of possible replacements for Athletic Director Rick Greenspan, the university pulled a quick one. While the names Bob De Carolis and Scott Dolson were the most popular in the rumor mill, in the end, it was IU alumnus Fred Glass who got the job. For now, Hoosier fans can only read about what Glass has done since graduating with a law degree in 1984. Unless Glass pulled a George O’Leary, all signs seem to be pointing to the consensus that this decision was a great one.

Just over a week ago, on Oct. 20, IU spokesperson Larry MacIntyre announced that the search committee had narrowed the field down to about five candidates. From there, rumors starting swirling that De Carolis, the current athletic director at Oregon State, and Dolson, IU’s Associate Athletic Director were the front runners. IU’s formal response to NCAA allegations made public

The Indiana University Athletics Department released its official response to the NCAA’s “Failure to Monitor” allegation to the public today. In it, IU refutes claims that it failed to monitor former coach Kelvin Sampson and his recruiting practices while with the school’s men’s basketball team.

“We have submitted our response as instructed by the NCAA,” said Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan in a press release. “President McRobbie has consistently stated his strong belief that the IU athletic department met or exceeded standards in the area of monitoring, and we hope for a successful adjudication of this allegation.”

2012 star-in-the-making Rapheal Davis talks Indiana basketball

Rapheal Davis hasn’t even had his first official high school practice yet, but that hasn’t stopped the hype that is quickly hovering around the Fort Wayne South Side freshman. The 6-foot 4-inch 2012 prospect has already jumped up the recruiting boards for some of the most prestigious basketball programs in the nation. IUplanet caught up with Rapheal to discuss his game, Tom Crean and his Indiana recruitment.

Davis was one of 60 or so kids who was invited to and participated in the Indiana Elite camp last month. Report: Crean given 2-year contract extension

Before ever coaching a single game for the Indiana Hoosiers, the Indy Star has reported that new head coach Tom Crean has been given a 2-year contract extension. The new contract will keep Crean with IU through the 2017-2018 season. The terms of the contract have not yet been released.

Upon coming to Indiana, Crean had initially agreed to an 8-year contract worth $18.24 million. Crean had agreed to this deal but signing a Memorandum of Understanding on April 1, but he and the university never completed an official contract.

There could be a number of reasons for the extension.

IU names Ian Rickerby Director of Compliance

Just days after Chad Hawley decided he didn’t want to take over as the compliance director for IU athletics, the university has found a replacement. This time, the appointment comes from within the Indiana family.

Ian Rickerby, who was formerly the IU women’s soccer coach, was promoted from within the IU compliance department yesterday afternoon.

Clippers’ Eric Gordon injures hamstring, out for remainder of NBA Summer League

After nearly fully recovering from the wrist injury that bothered him for much of his freshman year at IU, Eric Gordon has a new injury to limit his play. The Los Angeles Clippers confirmed today that Gordon will miss the remainder of the NBA Summer League with a strained left hamstring. He played in only two games in the Summer League before suffering the strain Saturday in a loss to the Charlotte Bobcats.

After one rocky season at IU, Eric Gordon can’t seem to escape bad luck, this time suffering an injury that ended his NBA Summer League season early.

Q & A with Maurice Sutton, who IU recently offered a basketball scholarship

Reports broke today that IU has extended a scholarship offer to high school senior Maurice Sutton. Sutton, a 6’11’’ center from Largo High School in Upper Marlboro, Md., is a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com. He could prove to be a very valuable asset for the Hoosiers, who currently lack depth inside. IUplanet talked to Sutton over the phone tonight.

Maryland big man Maurice Sutton confirmed over the phone that IU has extended him an offer, but does not know when he will make his decision.

Q & A with Alabama guard Nick Williams, who signed with IU today

It’s official—6’5’’ guard Nick Williams from LeFlore High School in Mobile, Alabama has signed with the Indiana Hoosiers. Williams had originally signed to play under Coach Tom Crean at Marquette Univeristy, but backed out of his letter of intent to play for the Golden Eagles. He made his decision to follow Crean to Indiana official today.

Williams, the once Marquette-signee, signed to play under Tom Crean at Indiana today.

Williams just wrapped up his senior season at LeFlore High School, was awarded the Alabama 6A player of the year award, and helped lead his team to a No. 5 national ranking. Vincennes University head coach Everick Sullivan has been around basketball for a long time. He was a Parade All-American out of high school then spent four years at playing at Louisville under head coach Denny Crum. He has been a college coach for four years and just finished his third season as the head coach at Vincennes University. This past season, Sullivan led the Trailblazers to a 28-6 record.

Vincennes coach Everick Sullivan is confident that Devan Dumes will succeed as a Hoosier.

That team’s leading scorer, Devan Dumes, committed to play for IU next season on Saturday. Sullivan had great things to say about Dumes when IUplanet talked to him Monday.
